70th Anniversary – Refugee Camp Marienfelde
The artwork was created on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Marienfelde refugee camp by the artist duo MANNSTEIN VILL. The exhibition inside the Erinnerungsstätte Notaufnahmelager Marienfelde (Marienfelde Refugee Center Memorial) documents the history of the German-German refugee movement on around 450 square meters.
The Refugee Center was founded in 1953. Two thirds of the total number of refugees from the GDR had to be managed before the Wall was built. A total of 1.35 million people passed through this “bottleneck to freedom” by 1990, including celebrities such as actor Manfred Krug. Although many refugees only stayed here for a short time, the reception camp had a special meaning for them: as a biographical interface between their old life in the GDR and the new one they longed for in the Federal Republic.
The exhibition in the former administration building of the reception center documents the history of the German-German refugee movement on around 450 square meters. Over 900 exhibits offer diverse insights into this exciting chapter of recent German history. The exhibition systematically relates important political developments to the personal experiences of the refugees and those who have left the country. It presents individual biographies as well as case studies and lets selected contemporary witnesses have their say at many audio and video stations. A reconstructed refugee apartment with original furniture and fittings from the 1950s gives an impression of the living conditions in the emergency camp. Literary and artistic works on the subject of flight, which are presented in multimedia form, allow a different perspective. – City of Berlin
