You simply have to love them – the „Human Beans“ in RAL 2000 color by the British and currently in Hamburg living artist DAVE THE CHIMP. Cheeky, funny, intelligent, effectively reduced to a maximum, with the highest recognition value. An ingenious „trademark“ that always makes you smile, amuses you uninhibitedly, but also makes you think, makes you reflect. Whenever I discover his works in hidden corners of cities, my day is saved.
While many of his protagonists run their less varied works through color copiers and then stick them randomly on various house walls, DAVE’s works are always characterized by a well-considered reflection of the place of application. Each of his public works always have a reference to the respective location, its peculiarities, its absurdities, the legacies of some of his contemporaries there. This makes him special and his works almost unique.
You can see a selection of his works in Hamburg in this article, mostly from the districts Mümmelmannsberg and Harburg, but as well from the capital city Berlin. On the following photos you can also discover some works of other artists like STICKERMAID, FRITTEN FREDDIE, NEAL or SEILEISE. Via streetart image searches I came across the platform Urbanshit, which is recommended for urban art, and their statement about the number of all the existing works in this „problem district“ on the edge of Hamburg is up to 170 pieces, but experience has shown that this must be critically questioned and those have never existed in this big number, still there are definitely a lot around. So explore for yourself and send us photos!
In the district Harburg, DAVE was able to design a complete bigger house wall in a parking lot for the event WALLS CAN DANCE. This mural also bears witness to his fine sense of humor. DAVE THE CHIMP was born 1973 in London and lives in Berlin. He has been a skater since the mid-1980s, has been publishing fanzines since the 1990s and has been spray-painting in public spaces since 1998. He still does all this today – but now also works as an illustrator, directs pop videos, compiles books and curates exhibitions. His art is shown in galleries and museums around the world, alongside other graffiti greats such as Banksy, Blu, Miss Van, Swoon, Os Gêmeos, Shepard Fairey, Space Invader and Zevs. DAVE was the first British artist to design a skate shoe for Vans in 2008, and a book of his work (Part of Rebellion #2 – Dave the Chimp) was published by Publikat a year later. In the last decade, he has built architectural sculptures made of wood or concrete that you can skate on in Berlin, Milan and Bern, among other places. DAVE is currently in a phase of transformation and wants to call for new perspectives and participation in protest culture. He spreads positive energy with the Human Beans characters and the Zine Idiot Island, which illustrates his new adventures.
