Tribute to Rudolf Benario & Bella Rosenkranz – July 2022
Rudolf Benario was born on 2ßth September 1908 in Frankfurt am Main. He came from a Jewish family and studied law and social sciences. He was politically active in the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) and opposed National Socialism. In 1933, he was arrested by the Nazis and taken to the Dachau concentration camp. There, he was murdered on 12th April 1933 at the age of only 24. He was among the first victims killed at the Dachau concentration camp. Today, a memorial in Fürth honors his memory. And now also a huge graffiti wall.
Bella Rosenkranz was born on 16th October 1921 in Fürth. Because of her Jewish heritage and her father’s Polish ancestry, she was deported to Poland by the Gestapo in 1938. She later ended up in the Soviet Union, where she endured many difficult years, including time in captivity and in the Gulag.
In 1961, she was able to return to Fürth. Despite her horrific experiences, she later became actively involved in the Jewish community and in Christian-Jewish dialogue, and helped other Jewish people integrate into society. In 2011, she received the City of Fürth’s Letter of Honor for her services. Since 2018, Bella-Rosenkranz-Straße in Fürth has been named in her honor.
Both memorial persons serve as reminders of the crimes of National Socialism. While Rudolf Benario was one of the first victims of Nazi terror, Bella Rosenkranz survived persecution, deportation, and imprisonment and later worked to promote understanding and humanity. This collaborative mural was created jointly by many artists from the city in their memory and to commemorate human moral resistance. Also to remind us, that we all have these human natural abilities in us every day and all the time. We just have to use it. Maybe this awesome concept wall gives new impulses. Definitely since its making in July 2022 it is another creative highlight of urban art in the city.
