Räterepublik  –  Anarchistic Revolution in Munich 1919  

This great mural was created in April 2019 on around 1000 m² at the SWM Substation by WON ABC. The „Münchener Räterepublik“ or in English „Munich Soviet Republic“, also known as the Bavarian Soviet Republic, was proclaimed on April 7th in 1919. It represented an attempt, lasting approximately four weeks, to establish a socialist Soviet republic in the Free State of Bavaria, which had been founded five months earlier.

The mural depicts Kurt Eisner (USPD), who proclaimed the „Free State“ of Bavaria on November 8th in 1918, and was the first Minister-President to be assassinated on February 21st in 1919. This led to the split of the already relatively heterogeneous and unstable revolutionary movement in Bavaria.

Sonja Lerch, born Sarah Sonja Rabinowitz, was a socialist, pacifist, and peace activist, born on May 3rd in 1882 in Warsaw. Even before 1900, she was a member of the Jewish Labour Bund and helped to prepare for the first Russian Revolution in 1905. In 1914, she was among the first declared opponents of the war at the outbreak of the First World War and a co-founder of the Munich branch of the Independent Social Democratic Party of Germany (USPD). On February 1st in 1918 she was arrested for treason and found hanged in Munich Stadelheim Prison on March 29th in 1918.

Erich Mühsam was an anarchist German writer, publicist and antimilitarist, born in Berlin on April 6th in 1878. After the suppression of the Bavarian Soviet Republic, he was sentenced to 15 years in a fortress, amnestied in 1924, imprisoned again at the beginning of the Nazi dictatorship, and murdered in the Oranienburg concentration camp on 10th July in 1934.

Gustav Landauer was an anarchist and pacifist philosopher, born on April 7th in 1870 in Karlsruhe. He was imprisoned immediately after the suppression of the Bavarian Soviet Republic and, while imprisoned in Munich Stadelheim prison, was mistreated by Freikorps soldiers and murdered on May 2nd in 1919.

Ernst Hugo Toller was a member of the Independent Social Democratic Party of Germany (USPD), a German pacifist writer of Jewish origin, politician, playwright, and left-wing socialist revolutionary. He was born on December 1st in 1893 in Samotschin, Province of Posen, Poland. After the suppression of the Polish Soviet Republic, he was sentenced to five years‘ imprisonment in a fortress, stripped of his German citizenship by the Nazi regime, and emigrated to New York City in 1939. He committed suicide on May 22nd in 1939, in a room at the Mayflower Hotel overlooking Central Park.
