The Waldheim Gaffenberg has been a holiday paradise for children for nearly 100 years and is the largest forest home of its kind in Europe. Up to 2.000 children and young people take part in the children’s camps every year and spend part of their summer holidays here. According to the name, the huge area is located on the Gaffenberg mountain, whose approximately 4 hectare site is located about 200 m west of the Kopfertal alley. The children’s leisure activities go back to Pastor Theodor Zimmermann (1893–1974), who worked as a youth pastor in Heilbronn from 1922. Three years later in 1925, the CVJM Heilbronn acquired a 37-acre site on the Gaffenberg, built a hall with a kitchen extension there and in 1927 organized the first summer camp for 200 children under the direction of Pastor Zimmermann. Meanwhile the Waldheim Gaffenberg developed to a much bigger nature headquarters not only for children, abut also for conferences, workshops or different kinds of events. There are adventure playgrounds, group areas, farm buildings, various halls and overnight rooms. Especially the Gaffenberg Festival with many local and national artist is a very famous annual event throughout the region. There is also some graffiti and streetart on the walls of the buildings around the area.
