Probably the best-known abandoned site in Hanover comprises the production halls of the Continental plant on the Stichkanal in the Limmer district. The site was taken over by Continental in 1929 and until the plant was closed in 2000, more than 1000 employees produced every conceivable rubber part, such as shoe soles, tires and bicycle inner tubes.
In May 2002, the site was purchased by the Wasserstadt Limmer GmbH, which was founded specifically for this project purpose. Since then several buildings have already been demolished and step by step the others will follow. The plan is to construct a water town with service and residential buildings for more than 1800 flats around that area. So you have to hurry if you still want to see the last parts of that abandoned lost place factory. Still the water tower and other parts of the factory complex will definitely be preserved because they are listed buildings. The old ruins at Wunstorfer Straße 130 can be reached by bus number 700 in direction Dedensen / Wunstorf till the bus stop “Limmer/ Conti”.
These photos are from 2017! In the meantime, a large wing of the lost place of the former Conti(nental) plant, which is known beyond the borders of the country, has been demolished to make way for a “water city” project by the Papenburg company. Before that time, the building was still more or less “accessible”; today the site is under surveillance. The photos and location are therefore historical. Unfortunately, I got there too late. When I look at old lost-place photos of the Contiwerk, then I have to say, I definitely missed a very significant and astonishing urban art place. – Irxnschmoiz
