The city of Dortmund in the Ruhr metropolitan region has 603,000 inhabitants and is known for its historical coal mining industry and the countless remnants of it, which can now be visited as tourist attractions. The region has undergone a structural change, as mining no longer exists and heavy industry, if it still exists at all, is also struggling to survive. However, the surface facilities of the mines, coking plants, and steelworks have been repurposed and now house services, culture, art, and museums. Fortunately, many landmarks are protected and have not been demolished. These include, in particular, the head frames of the coal mines. One tip is the Ruhr.Topcard, where you pay a small one-time fee and can visit the highlights either free of charge or at a greatly reduced admission price within a calendar year. The photographer and artist IRXNSCHMOIZ visited the city several times and brought back so many photos that we started a map. There are certainly many more spots and artworks, so if you have any photos of Dortmund yourself and if you want to participate, you can send them to info@vagabundler.com and we will add them to this map.
How does the map work? All the buttons on the map are links to a photo gallery of the spot, sometimes with only one photo, sometimes with heaps of photos or even a full article. The different symbols explain various categories of the streetart and graffiti artworks. In the navigation of the map on the left you can find the several markers sorted by the categories and it´s possible to hide or fade these layers.
