The Bremerhaven Swing Bridge

This photo shows the access to the connecting harbor and the image was taken from the “Container Observation Tower”. The rail connection was no longer available due to an accident. Some ship crashed the largest railroad swing bridge in Germany. As well you can see one of the many car transport ships in the background.

The city of Bremerhaven about the famous bridge: The swing bridge in front of the Nordschleuse was the largest railroad swing bridge in Germany. It formed an important link between the railroad line and the Columbus station and was built between 1928 and 1930 as part of the large-scale port expansion measures. The engineer and bridge designer Hans Georg Herrmann (1865-1932) was responsible for its construction. A consortium consisting of MAN in Mainz-Gustavsburg and Dortmunder Union was awarded the contract for construction by the Bremen state. At the same time, an engine house for the electric motors and movement equipment, designed by the Bremen architect Karl Falge in a clinker brick construction typical of the time, was built. The riveted steel bridge structure had a length of 111.9 meters, two rail tracks, a two-lane road and a crosswalk. It could be turned in around seven minutes to allow car transporters or repair ships from the Lloyd shipyard to pass through, for example. After an accident in 2021, the swing bridge was completely demolished. Since then, traffic has been partially replaced by a ferry. A new bridge is currently being planned.  –  City of Bremerhaven
