GERMANY: Chemnitz – Chemnitztal 54 – AJZ Talschock – We feed the Wall – Creative Urban Art Space

The alternative youth centre AJZ TALSCHOCK hosts a variety of creative projects and groups. It regularly hosts concerts, theatre and stage events. The premises offer free Wi-Fi, free computer workstations, the gym „Bodyfarm,“ a creative workshop, a media workshop, a screen printing workshop, a photo lab, the climbing wall „The Rock,“ the fully equipped junior band rehearsal room „Youth against Air Guitars“ and the archive of the social movements „SERO“ for research, as well as sanitary facilities, washing machines and dryers for use for a fee of 1 euro per wash.

The film club meets every Monday from 9pm and organises cinema events, every Tuesday from 6pm there is KüFa (kitchen for all) at ReTeKo, open circus training is offered every Tuesday from 4.30pm to 6.30pm and, if there are enough participants, also a boxing session. Outside there are the graffiti walls, the skate and BMX park „Area 54“ and the ecological and socio-cultural project „Nia Domo“.

The beginnings of the center and the association can be traced back to an initiative of the New Forum in 1989. After the fall of the Berlin Wall and reunification, all parties, associations and movements active in Chemnitz were given offices in the building of the SED district administration to begin their work. Among these groups was the Revolutionary Autonomous Youth Association (RAJV). At the same time, a group of people from other associations met regularly in the Reading Café and later on in the Hotel Moscow. They came up with the idea of a selfmanaged youth center independent of the city, country and parties.

In 1990, the association named „Alternatives Jugendzentrum“ or in short AJZ and in English „Alternative Youth Center“ was founded and the AJZ became a founding member of the Stadtjugendring, which would mean in English „City Youth Ring“. After years of occupying houses and fighting with right-wing radicals, who also set fires, the association was finally able to move into a permanent residence at Chemnitztal Straße 54 and named the new headquarters  AJZ TALSCHOCK. Over the years, the alternative center was renovated and expanded piece by piece, clubs and creative groups were founded, projects started and the cultural offer expanded.  –  AJZ Talschock

In May 2007, the legal “Wall of Fame” graffiti areas were opened in the outdoor area and on the facades around the building, where the “We feed the Wall” jam now takes place annually. Here is a collection of the graffiti and streetart works around the site taken by photographer RENE GIESE aka SILENT PICTURE COMMANDO.
