The Alte Schlachthof, in English „Old Slaughterhouse“, on Tumblinger Straße in Munich is known for its lively, alternative cultural scene and its open graffiti and streetart areas with a Hall of Fame, where sprayers can legally leave their artworks. It is the longest legal graffiti wall in Munich, stretching across Tumblinger Straße, but there are also countless works on the buildings.
This used to be the site of the former slaughterhouse, but today the area is home to the alternative cultural project BAHNWÄRTER THIEL. An old container station that has been converted into a cultural and festival venue, and the new Volkstheater. There are culinary and gastronomic offerings such as the Goldmarie restaurant, craft beer bars, and market halls with food and delicacies.
BAHNWÄRTER THIEL is a vibrant place that combines art and culture and makes them accessible to everyone. A curious collection of Munich tram and subway cars, artistically painted shipping containers, and a crane equipped with floating gondolas and sturdy carriages provides an exciting backdrop for interpersonal encounters and the continuous transport of programs and content. While families and friends cultivate community gardens at a leisurely pace and new ideas emerge amid vibrant graffiti, artists of all professions realize their visions in their studios, rehearsal rooms, open workspaces, and workshops. A subway car with a surrounding sun terrace houses a bistro serving lunch and dinner.
The TRAM STOP next door is a youth meeting place, offering space for workshops and experiments. Right next to it is the cultural center, which reflects the diversity and creativity of Munich’s cultural scene in its vibrant program. It features established formats such as concerts, club nights, flea markets, film screenings, readings, travelogues, dance classes, and theater performances. Since 2015, the BAHNWÄRTER THIEL cultural project has been a popular and daily meeting place for people from all over the world, contributing to the development of a thoughtful, respectful, and forward-thinking society.
