Urban Art Biennale 2024 – „Torches of Freedom“
The artist THE WA originally comes from France and currently lives and works in the German capital Berlin. For the Biennale in 2014, he painted and covered one of the chimneys with paint and foil. However, this was not completely and perfectly applied like a new glaze, but rather tattered and worn looking. Nevertheless, it looks different than it should look in an ironwork and the colors also catch the eye, someone changed something. It is a subtle but attentive creative transformation at second glance. But the title “Torches of Freedom” shows that it is actually a critical pointer to the environmental pollution caused by greenhouse gases from countless factories. Just as the work of art is discreetly installed at first, millions of chimneys around the world blow pollutants into the air just as „discreetly“.
