Heidelberg is a city on the river Neckar in southwest Germany with around 160,000 inhabitants. It is best known for its 14th century university, the beautiful Renaissance Castle and its historic old town. The magnificent METROPOLINK FESTIVAL also takes place here regularly and has already invited many fantastic artists from all around the world to embellish the city with everything from small works to huge murals. There are sure to be more to come at the following events in the future. This collection of urban creations was photographed by FRANK HOFMANN and FLORIAN AUERBACH. JANISDEMAN
Heidelberg has been an official member of the “UNESCO Creative Cities Network” as a “UNESCO City of Literature” since December 1, 2014. To mark the tenth anniversary of this award in 2024, this mural project by Dutch artist JANISDEMAN was realized on the initiative of the Heidelberg Community Foundation, which shows 18 book spines on a shelf that have a special connection to the city, as well as an oversized teddy bear. The project was carried out in close cooperation with the Metropolink Festival, which also celebrated its tenth anniversary this year. Heidelberg is home to more Nobel Prize winners than any other German city, so the idea of making this literary significance visible in a unique work of art was developed together with the cultural department and the city’s civil engineering department.
