Schachtanlage Büchenberg – Schaubergwerk
The Büchenberg mine near Elbingerode in the Harz Mountains is a former iron ore mine that can now be visited as a tourist mine. Mining in this area dates back to the Middle Ages and shaped the region for many centuries. Iron ore was mined here particularly intensively until production ceased in 1970. Inside the mine, an extensive network of tunnels was created, stretching for many kilometers and reaching depths of several hundred meters. Parts of it are now accessible as part of guided tours. Visitors gain a vivid insight into the miners’ working world and the historical mining technology, including fully functional machinery from the era of mining in the GDR. Today, the site serves not only as a technical monument but also as a testament to the mining history of the Harz Mountains. It combines industrial history, geology, and the natural landscape, bringing the former iron ore mining industry to life for visitors. And as is often the case with “lost places”, there are also some colorful graffiti, characters, and streetart pieces around here. The following collection was photographed by IRXNSCHMOIZ.
