Celle is a historic royal seat in Lower Saxony, located on the southern edge of the Lüneburg Heath. The city has a population of about 71.000 and is best known for its superbly preserved old town, which features over 400 half-timbered houses, one of the largest contiguous ensembles of its kind in Europe. Among the most famous sights are Celle Castle, the old town with its winding alleys, and St. Mary’s Church. Of particular interest to art lovers is the Celle Art Museum with the Robert Simon Collection. It is considered the world’s first 24-hour art museum and combines modern and contemporary art with spectacular light installations that are visible from the outside even at night. Another architectural highlight is the Lichtkunstbahnhof Celle, the first German train station to be permanently designed with light art by international artists.
