Kings Wall – Universitätsstraße
In autumn 2021 the retaining wall on Universitätsstraße got a new look and 28 graffiti artists were involved in the redesign. About 20 years ago the wall was primarly decorated with large-scale graffiti. Over time, the colors faded and the effect of beautifying the urban space threatened to tip into the opposite due to neglect. To counteract this, the approximately 1,000 square meter area was redesigned. Around 28 artists from various crews worked on the wall. The motifs were chosen by the artists themselves. Motifs associated with sexism, racism and violence were taboo.
The large-scale artworks were intended to turn the neglected urban space into a calling card for a creative and collaborative Bochum. The graffiti project is part of the program of urban culture and art education – in this case especially for young people. The Streetart / Graffiti Bochum e.V. offers workshops for children, young people and adults. On the guided tours through Bochum, workshop participants are given an understanding of the history behind the motifs. – Bochum Fonds
