GERMANY: State Insane Asylum Domjüch - Lost Place Urbex - Artbase Festival

Urban art in lost places and forgotten worlds, such as an abandoned psychiatric ward. That’s what the ARTBASE festival offered in 2019 on the grounds of the former Domjüch state mental institution in Neustrelitz. More than 150 international artists and five Berlin collectives designed the walls of the asylum from the inside and outside with breathtaking works of art.

The festival program also included an extensive music line up with more than 60 DJs and live acts on two indoor floors and an open air stage. There were also numerous art installations, theater performances and video mappings, as well as several decentralized smaller stages for spontaneous unplugged sessions and experimental performances. You could participate in workshops, watch live paintings, store at art booths or eat delicious homemade dishes at the food stands. So from August 30th to September 1st in 2019, there was hilarious painting and crazy dancing at the insane asylum.

The first ARTBASE festival took place in 2011 in Oranienburg in a former lung sanatorium at the Grabowsee, followed by the second festival in 2012 on the Teufelsberg in Berlin and at the same time in Kosterfelde near Barnim in Brandenburg. After a few years break, the festival then took place again in 2018 in its third edition at Mensch Meier in Berlin and in cooperation with the association „Kultur Fertig Los“ at the White Villa on Lake Constance aka Villa Vagabunt. The fourth festival in 2019 was organized by the agency go2know, which has been involved with lost places since 2009. All the events have been created without funding or sponsors, but the organizers are supported by Street Art Berlin, Kultur Späti and we did nothing wrong.
