Salt production in Bentlage can boast of almost a thousand years of history, with the first documentary mention dating back to 1022. Operations were discontinued in 1953 and the brine bath was finally closed in 1975. In the meantime, the area has been converted into a museum and historical cultural site that interested people can visit. Here we have photos of the Salzsiedehaus (=Salt Boiling House). More photos can be found on the pages for the great mural „Die Salzarbeiter“ (=The Salt Workers) made by the artist duo MANNSTEIN VILL, the sculpture „Der Salzsieder“ (= The Salt Boiler) by WERNER BRUNING, the Gradierwerk (=Grading House), the Schausiedepfanne (=Show Boiling Pan) and the Dreigiebelhaus (=Three Gabled House), which also functions as the visitors information center.
Salzsiedehaus – Salt Boiling House

In the salt boiling house, the salt was extracted from the brine by heating it. Four large boiling pans made of riveted sheet iron were once available for this purpose. The furnaces and historic salt stores have also been preserved to this day. In the west wing of the house lived the salt works inspector, who was in charge of the salt works. – Rheine Tourismus

More photos of the front are on the page with the wall painting by MANNSTEIN VILL

Information Board – Städtische Museen Rheine

The salt boiling house was built according to plans by Baron von Beust in the years 1744 to 1745. Here the brine, which had been raised in the graduation tower, was heated in large boiling pans until the salt crystallized. The skimmed salt was filled into pointed baskets, dried and, after being sold in the region, was mainly used to salt the dishes. – Städtische Museen Rheine
