Salt production in Bentlage can boast of almost a thousand years of history, with the first documentary mention dating back to 1022. Operations were discontinued in 1953 and the brine bath was finally closed in 1975. In the meantime, the area has been converted into a museum and historical cultural site that interested people can visit. Here we have photos of the Dreigiebelhaus (=Three Gabled House), which also functions as the visitors information center. Saline Bentlage Timeline
In 1022 the salt works were first mentioned. It was donated to the Bishop of Munster. In 1437, the Crusader monastery in Bentlage acquired the salt works. In 1577 the barons of Veelen took over the use of the salt works. In 1743 the bishop of Münster founded a saline partnership. In 1900 the partnership was converted into a public limited company. In 1923 the Saline came into the possession of the city of Rheine. In 1952, salt was extracted in the Salzsiedehaus for the last time. In 1975 the bathing was stopped.

Since it was founded in 2010, the „Verein zur Förderung der Saline Gottesgabe“ or in English „The Gottesgabe Salt Works Society“ has been trying to raise awareness among the population for the preservation of the valuable monument and to contribute to the maintenance of the historical complex. The association also aims to make known the historical method of salt boiling, as it was practiced in the salt works for centuries, and to research and document it through salt projects.
