Salt production in Bentlage can boast of almost a thousand years of history, with the first documentary mention dating back to 1022. The operations of the „Saline Gottesgabe“ were discontinued in 1953 and also the connected brine bath was finally closed in 1975. In the meantime, the area has been converted into a museum and historical cultural site that interested people can visit. Here we have photos of the Gradierwerk (=Grading House). More photos can be found on the pages for the great mural „Die Salzarbeiter“ (=The Salt Workers) made by the artist duo MANNSTEIN VILL, the sculpture „Der Salzsieder“ (= The Salt Boiler) by WERNER BRUNING, the Salzsiedehaus (=Salt Boiling House), the Schausiedepfanne (=Show Boiling Pan) and the Dreigiebelhaus (=Three Gabled House), which also functions as the visitors information center.
Gradierwerk – Grading House

The grading building served to increase the salt content in the brine. The evaporation of fresh water during the drip grading turned a 5 to 9 percent brine into a 20 to 25 percent brine. The brine trickles over a bundle of black thorns and is thereby finely atomized. Grading saved a lot of energy when boiling. The brine was then conducted through wooden pipes to the salt boiling pans in the salt boiling house. Even today, the graduation house is still running and those looking for peace and quiet enjoy the salty air. – Rheine Tourismus

Photo of the last original section of the grading house built between 1743 and 1745. From the baroque graduation tower, as designed by the salt works specialist Freiherr von Beust, only parts of the 35 meters long western part have been preserved. The central part collapsed during a thunderstorm in 1940. – Städtische Museen Rheine
