The Berninghoff in the village of Catenhorn near Rheine is part of the historical legacy looked after by the local heritage association for Hauenhorst and Catenhorn. The association preserves the old buildings and objects, but also gives interested visitors the opportunity to view them and offers guided tours.
The building was constructed in the mid-18th century and the stove that was used to heat the entire house is known to have been built in 1868. The numbers can also be seen on the inscriptions on the front. All the soot over the years has made the stove look very dark and black.
The bull and the horse are located above the stove. Behind them is the smoke outlet from the fire. These works of art are more than 100 years old, a remarkable time and they have survived. Unfortunately, the artist is not known. I was given the opportunity and permission to view and photograph these artworks. – Holger Peter
