In Memory of Helmholtz – Bilderflut XXIX – Der Augenspiegel
This mural was created on the north facade of the Helmholtz High School and is titled „Bilderflut XXIX – Der Augenspiegel“, which would mean in English „Flood of Images XXIX – The Eye Mirror“. It was finished in June 2007 as a participating art project for kids and teens. It shows the famous German physician, physiologist, and physicist Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand von Helmholtz. As a polymath, he made important contributions to the mathematical theory of optics, acoustics, electrodynamics, thermodynamics, and hydrodynamics. He was born on 31st August 1821 in Potsdam and died on 8th September 1894 in Berlin.
The writing around his head „Das menschliche Auge blinzelt 25.000 mal am Tag“ means in English „The human eye blinks 25,000 times a day“. And the writing below „Zeichnen ist Sprache für die Augen. Sprache ist Malerei für das Ohr“, means in English „Drawing is language for the eyes. Language is painting for the ears“. The project was initiated by the association PLANERLADEN E.V. as a visional dictionary of the city and a culture concept for the neighbourhood.
