GERMANY: Architecture Dortmund – Derne – Gneisenauallee 7 – Bergwerk Gneisenau

The photo shows Schacht II and Schacht IV of the Gneisenau mine, photographed from the Gneisenau slag heap. In 1872, the “Union” mining field was awarded to the Union drilling company from Neuss. On September 3rd in 1873, the Gneisenau union was granted mining rights and the application to build a shaft facility was approved. The mine was named after the Prussian Chief of Staff August Graf Neidhard von Gneisenau. In 1903, sinking work began on shaft III at Gneisenau. A so-called “Tomson-Bock” was erected as a headframe above all three shafts. This type of headframe is named after the mine director Eugen Tomson. The Tomson-Bock above Shaft II, which is a listed building, is the last, oldest, and only headframe of its kind in Europe. In 1927, the breakthrough took place, and in 1930, the mine merged with the Scharnhorst mine. In 1933, Shaft IV was put into operation as the central hoisting shaft for the Gneisenau and Scharnhorst facilities. By 1935, with a workforce of 2,500, production had already reached over one million tons of coal per year. Until the closure of the Gneisenau mine, more than 6000 workers produced over three million tons of coal annually and a total of 11 shafts were in operation. Finally the production was closed in 1995.  –  Förderkreis Zechenkultur Gneisenau e.V.
