GERMANY: Streetart Gößweinstein – Graffiti and Urban Art in Franconian Switzerland

Gößweinstein is a picturesque market town in Franconian Switzerland with around 4.100 inhabitants. The settlement developed in the Middle Ages around the medieval castle of Gößweinstein, which was first mentioned in documents in 1076 and dominated the surrounding area for a long time before the region fell to Bavaria in the course of secularization in 1803. The town quickly gained importance as a place of pilgrimage, especially with the construction of the magnificent Baroque Basilica of the Holy Trinity between 1730 and 1739, designed by architect BALTHASAR NEUMANN, which still attracts pilgrims and art lovers today. Also worth seeing are the historic town center, viewpoints such as Gernerfels or Kreuzberg, hiking trails through the characteristic dolomite landscape and traditional festivals such as the colorful „Osterbrunnen Dekoration“, in English „Easter Fountain Decorations“. The streets are also home to all kinds of urban artworks, from traditional wall paintings to installations and statues. The photos were taken by BAUQUELDIE.

Gottlob doch einmal nur, das Wasser uns erlabte.“  –  „From the rock, three springs gush forth, strong and cool, closely united, and carry their waves to the Wisunt at the Stempfermühle mill. Where meadows once trotted, and elk and primeval beasts to drink, there it was. Thank God, just once, that the water refreshed us.“  –  Exodus Cantorum, Viktor von Scheffel, 1859

Basilica Sculpture  –  JOHANN JAKOB MICHAEL KÜCHEL

The parish and pilgrimage church of the Holy Trinity in Gößweinstein is rightly considered the most important church in Franconian Switzerland. The great Baroque architect BALTHASAR NEUMANN provided the building plans, and JOHANN JAKOB MICHAEL KÜCHEL was responsible for the sculptures and interior decoration.

„Once upon a time…“  –  The Water of St. Elizabeth  –  Gößweinstein Legend Trail

The path from the Marienkapelle chapel in Gößweinstein up to Kreuzberg passes one of the first stops at a stone cave, which is lightly barred with an iron gate. Inside the cave, you can see a statue of Saint Elizabeth and a tablet-like stone with a plate-like opening that is constantly filled with water. It is strange that this water basin refills itself no matter how often it is emptied, even though no one can explain the source of the water. The water is considered to have healing properties for people with eye problems.

In the 13th century, Saint Elizabeth once found shelter in the naturally formed grotto during a thunderstorm. Even today, the grotto is still used as a shelter, for example when bats hibernate. They often hide deep in crevices or holes and are therefore difficult to spot. The picture of the “Franconian treasure hunter” was painted by 4th grade students (2014) at the Gößweinstein elementary and middle school.
