Gießen is a university town in central Hessen with around 90.000 inhabitants and is known for its young, student-oriented atmosphere. The town is located on the Lahn River and is primarily characterized by the Justus Liebig University, which was founded in 1607 and continues to play a major role in research and the economy today. Well-known sights include the Mathematikum, the world’s first interactive mathematics museum, the Botanical Garden, one of the oldest botanical gardens in Germany, and the Elefantenklo, a striking concrete pedestrian bridge that has become a city landmark. The city’s walls also have a lot to offer by featuring fantastic urban art. The crew 3STEPS in particular painted a lot themselves, and since 2013 they have been organizing the great streetart festival RIVER TALES, where artists from all over the world have created murals and graffiti ranging from small to large. „Dopamine am Burggraben“ – 3STEPS CREW
3STEPS about the project on their website: The SWG transformer station in Giessen’s Burggraben in the old town shines in new splendor. In September 2025, after a good three years of planning and preparation, work began on designing the façade. Using historical motifs, 3STEPS and SWG want to raise awareness among Giessen’s residents of their city’s history. The work highlights various elements of the origins of the Burggraben and its immediate surroundings.
The impetus for the design of the transformer station came from a local resident via the River Tales Festival. In implementing the project, great importance was attached to creating a work that was in harmony with its surroundings. The mural combines plans of the foundation walls of the Old Castle with a map of Giessen’s old town and its ramparts, which were built in the 16th century. The circle in the middle marks the area of the first castle. The central element is the front view of the Old Castle based on a sketch by Lothar Troller from 1825.
The Old Castle can also be seen on the right-hand side. This was based on a photo from 1905, taken after the castle was restored and repurposed as the Upper Hesse Museum. The city’s origins date back to 1150, when Giessen was a moated castle belonging to the Counts of Gleiberger. The background of the mural is kept in calm colors. The motifs are set off with bold orange and red tones, accented with violet and black. History meets modernity. The image motifs are integrated into abstract elements from the „Dopamine“ series by crew members KAI KRIEGER and UWE KRIEGER. – 3STEPS
