The Bavarian city of Augsburg is one of the oldest cities in the country and especially the old town is home to historic buildings from different eras. You should visit the medieval guild houses of the Fuggers, the Cathedral of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary from the 11th century and the Basilica of St. Ulrich and Afra with its onion dome. Another landmark of the „Fuggerstadt“ is the town center with the Golden Hall. Of course, Augsburg also has plenty of urban art to offer. Schwammstadt Augsburg – Sponge City Augsburg – BESOK
Augsburg wants to develop into a „Schwammstadt“, or in English „Sponge City“, in order to better cope with heavy rainfall and reduce heat stress by storing and using rainwater locally instead of draining it away. This is being achieved by unsealing surfaces, greening roofs and facades, and creating water storage facilities and swale-trench systems. Specific projects include the redesign of streets such as Hofackerstraße into climate streets and the incorporation of the principle into new development plans to strengthen the city’s climate resilience. A “Schwammstadt” is a city that absorbs, stores, and delays the release of rainwater like a sponge to improve the urban climate and prevent flooding.
