From 15th to 17th June in 2018, an extraordinary urban art spectacle took place right on the Weser River in the municipality of Lemwerder: the FARBFLUT FESTIVAL. More than 200 local, national, and international artists decorated the 920-meter-long and 3.5-meter-high flood protection wall on the western bank with countless magnificent works. This has created what is probably one of the largest open-air galleries in Germany, if not the largest, here in the Wesermarsch region. It’s called the WESER SIDE GALLERY. Unfortunately, the festival’s website and Instagram account no longer exist, but you can still admire the many great works here on our website.

Several artists and event organizers teamed up with the BEGU LEMWERDER meeting place and its director at that time and festival chief organizer Dieter Seidel to organize this fantastic event. Almost 40 helpers ensured that everything ran smoothly and distributed the 2.400 spray cans that had been ordered. The festival was accompanied by an entertaining supporting program with live music, workshops, and activities for children. The BATTLEBOX, led by KENMO, was also included. The total length of the wall, made of the finest exposed concrete, is 921 meters, but there is a section in between that was not sprayed. The northern section (53.160483, 8.623277 to 53.155256, 8.624222) is 585 meters long, the unpainted section is 65 meters long, and the southern section (53.154667, 8.624316 to 53.152240, 8.624713) is 271 meters long. This results in a painted area of 856 meters with around 3000 m².

Getting there: Unless you want to struggle through the villages and wetlands on the west side of the Weser River to get to the gallery, environmentally conscious visitors are advised to travel from the Bremen side. We recommend taking the RS1 regional train to the “Bremen-Vegesack” stop. After walking about 500 meters through the “old town,” you will reach the Weser Ferry between Vegesack and Lemwerder. Adult pedestrians can travel to the west bank for currently 1.60 Euro per trip. After a few minutes‘ crossing, there is a 900 meters walk from the “Lemwerder” ferry terminal along „Flughafenstraße“ towards the signposted “Weitblick” observation tower. However, the path to the banks of the Weser and thus to the gallery branches off shortly before reaching the entrance to the observation tower. The northern starting point of the gallery is in the immediate vicinity. – Irxnschmoiz

The artworks are listed below in alphabetical order. Clicking on the artist’s name will take you to a subpage with more photos and sometimes videos of the artwork, along with comprehensive information about its creators. The first link takes you to a page where the artworks are listed in the order they appear along the wall, starting at the southern end and continuing to the northern end.
