GERMANY: Streetart Pottenstein – Graffiti and Urban Art in Franconian Switzerland

Pottenstein is a small community in Franconian Switzerland region in Bavaria with around 5200 inhabitants. Due to its location and the associated landscape, the rock town was awarded the federal title “National Geotope” in 2006. It is one of 77 such sites throughout Germany. Together with the Luisenburg near Wunsiedel in the Fichtelgebirge mountains and the basalt cone of Parkstein, three of these are located in the Bavarian-Bohemian Geopark. Throughout the town you can also find beautiful wall paintings and urban artworks. The photos were taken by BAUQUELDIE.

The Pottenstein Geotop Trail  –  Geology Rock Town of Pottenstein

Pottenstein is characterized by a high density of karst formations with striking rocks, sinkholes, cave systems, dry valleys, and much more. Narrow valleys, steeply rising rocks, and extensive plateaus converge here to form the landscape elements so typical of the Franconian Alb. There are many caves in the vicinity of Pottenstein. The Hasenloch cave was already visited by prehistoric humans around 70,000 years ago. Along a trail leading to several nature spots you can find also many stone artworks and sculptures.

Steeply rising rocks, such as those in the Weihersbach Valley, dominate the valley flanks. Strongly flowing karst springs, such as here in the Klumpertal Valley, are the source of many water-rich rivers. The diversity of Pottenstein.
