The Dortmund U got its name from the large U sign emblazoned on its roof, which has become a landmark of the city that can be seen from afar. The building was constructed in 1926 as the cellar of the Dortmund Union Brewery. Today, it serves as a “Zentrum für Kunst und Kreativität” which means in English „Center for Art and Creativity“.
The Dortmund U is a new type of cultural center that combines art, research, cultural education, and creativity. It is a symbol of renewal and structural change in the Ruhr region. The aim is to promote understanding of social, political, economic, and ecological issues in a variety of ways. The Dortmunder U houses an art collection and regularly hosts exhibitions and events, including contemporary explorations of current social issues. These include artificial intelligence, body image, climate change, fashion, youth culture, visual language, gender roles, music scenes, migration, and, in particular, aspects of digitalization.
