The Florianturm, or Florian for short, is a landmark visible from afar and dominates the skyline of the city of Dortmund. The observation and television tower was built in 1959 on the occasion of the Federal Horticultural Show in Westfalenpark with a height of 219.3 meters. At the time, it was the tallest tower in Germany. Also the first of its kind was the rotating café at a height of 150 meters, which could seat 120 people. The viewing platform, at a height of 142 meters, offers a breathtaking 360° panorama over Dortmund to the deepest Ruhr area, and on a clear day even as far as the Rhine in Duisburg. View to the northwest. On the right edge of the image, you can see the Deusen sewage treatment plant, above it the Halde Deusenberg slag heap. In the foreground on the right is the Dortmund U, in the center left is the Dortmund harbor, above it the former Zeche Hansa coking plant, and to the left of it is the Hansa coal mine headframe. On the horizon, you can see Waltrop and Haltern am See, which are about 30 km away.

In the center of the image, you can see the Hammerkopfturm (Hammerhead Tower) of the “Minister Stein” coal mine approximately 6 km away, with the Dortmunder Aktienbrauerei brewery below it. At the top right of the picture, the building that looks like a white UFO is the so-called “Colani Egg” in Lünen-Brambauer. It is a converted head frame of the Minister Achenbach coal mine from Schacht IV, approximately 12 km away.
