GERMANY: Streetart Frankfurt – Ostend – Pfingstweid 2 – Die Katakombe &  Kulturhaus Frankfurt

Die Katakombe  &  Kulturhaus Frankfurt

This great artwork was painted on the side wall of the small but beautiful theater and culture house “Die Katakombe” or in English “The Catacomb”. The lovely theater was founded in October 1960 by an actor collective as the Frankfurt Cellar Theater. It was initially based on Schützen Street, in 1982 the theater moved to a former cinema on Pfingstweid Street near the zoo and has had its permanent home there ever since.

The auditorium of the new venue has 111 seats with standard seating and can be expanded for up to 150 spectators. The stage has a size of 50 m² and is at ground level to the spectators. The auditorium, originally used for cinema screenings, rises in rows like tribunes, so that the rear seats also have a good view of the stage.

The Katakombe offers a wide range across almost all genres of theater. Ever since the beginnings of theatre, the concept of the stage has been a very time-related, socially critical repertoire. The ensemble is always on the lookout for new interpretations and forms of play. The selection of authors ranges from the ancient Greeks to the classics to the present day. Elements of music and dance theater are indispensable in every production.

Since 1972, there has been the “theater for children” for younger audiences, with plays by the Berlin Grips Theater, the “Rote Grütze” and their own plays on children’s everyday lives, in close cooperation with the schools. The program is very much based on the Hessian curriculum for the subject German, in particular the reading lists for the Hessian state high school diploma. Meanwhile there are also shows by the cultural society “Kulturhaus Frankfurt” hosted in the building.
