Urban Art at the Tierpark Center Berlin
17.12.2021: During the renovation that is currently underway, the Tierpark Center in Lichtenberg is becoming a temporary open air gallery. Seven Berlin artists for urban art designed the wall surface of the center with motifs specially developed for the location. The creative temporary use was made possible by the on-site center management together with the child and adolescent psychotherapist Andrea Stöckmann and Ulrike Gohla from the STADTPIRATEN. The motto for the motifs is “Fare Well”.
The artworks were created on the one hand to say goodbye to the old location and on the other hand it is intended to arouse the residents’ curiosity about how the district will present itself after the renovation. “Making art accessible to everyone has long been our goal, and especially now during the pandemic,” Andrea Stöckmann explains the initiative. “We want to promote local artists and the legal participation of the population in urban space design.”
Making objects and wall surfaces legally usable for creative projects not only enlivens the place itself, but also promotes dialogue with one another. The artists, often commissioned painters for house facades or street art and graffiti artists from different milieus and work areas, need a training field where they can practice their techniques and try out new things. If such legal wall surfaces are missing, this often drives the artists into illegality and thus also into criminal prosecution. Not so in Lichtenberg: The facades of the Tierpark Center now shine in a new, dazzling blaze of colors and enrich the environment with colorful and varied wall designs – a great side effect in times of the pandemic and a strong plus for the future district. – EMILY STRANGE, Press release from December 17, 2021
