During September 2017, on the Bockenheim campus of the Goethe University in Frankfurt, you could see busy working with spray cans and on lifting platforms, and the lab room got a new coat of paint. Graffiti artist JUSTUS BECKER aka COR and painter OĞUZ ŞEN have struck again, or rather pressed the spray buttons and swung the brush. The result is probably the largest gift package in town: a completely painted building covered with a thick red gift bow.
The two have dedicated the tied work of art and their working hours to the subject of flight and exile. Refugees have already found shelter in the lab room for the past few years, more are expected and they should now be greeted with a nicer picture. The whole thing looks fantastic in terms of color alone, light and warm tones were chosen. Much more important, however, is the selected composition of the elements and their message.
The great thinkers and sociologists Adorno and Horkheimer denounce the facades with large, stern glasses and are meant to remind of their own flight and exile during the Nazi era. Germany was not always a welcome country. After their return, the two professors rebuilt what was left of the Frankfurt University. The architect Ferdinand Kramer, who also fled, designed the lab hall after his return.

During the painting work we talked to the artist OĞUZ ŞEN about the sensational giant mural, the refugee situation and the possibilities of self-engagement, but also about fear of heights and how the lifting platform was sunk in the lawn:
On September 9th 2017, the redesigned lab hall was officially presented to the public with a small event. Here it also became clear that the two artists not only want to give impulses for reflection and networking through their work, but are already involved in an extensive network. The „Solidarity City“ was launched on this day and around the opening event of the graffiti house there were further exhibitions and information events from the Offenes Haus der Kulturen (Open House of Cultures) and the Stadtteilbüro Bockenheim (district office), Good Morning Deutschland Radio also designed a program and recorded a broadcast.
Anna Retzer from the Stadtteilbüro Bockenheim (district office) told us in an interview how the graffiti project came about, what the „Solidarity City“ is and how you can get involved. The podcast is in German:
Basically, it is about not letting political events pass you by in frustration, but rather realizing that it is time to take things into your own hands and get together with others to get your own projects off the ground. The initiative Zukunft Bockenheim (Future Bockenheim), No Border and the Project Shelter are also involved in “Solidarity City”. The transfer to a new use of the former university campus as a culture campus is just one example of how residents can design their surroundings themselves.
