Culture Department of the City of Frankfurt: “An den Händen beiden/ ließ er sich nicht schneiden / seine Nägel fast ein Jahr. / Kämmen ließ er nicht sein Haar”. It rhymes in German and would mean translated: “On both hands / he didn’t get cut / his nails for almost a year. / He didn’t let his hair be combed” – almost everyone in Germany, especially in Frankfurt knows the classic children’s book of Struwwelpeter. This and other figures from the picture book were immortalized by the sculptor FRANZISKA LENZ-GERHARZ in a bronze fountain at the Frankfurt Hauptwache.
Struwwelpeter has a very special meaning in Frankfurt. The psychiatrist Heinrich Hoffmann invented him in the 19th century and created an exaggerated educational-moral collection of stories with satirical moments.
Above all, it is about disobedient children who do not listen to their parents and who therefore suffer disasters. And so not only in the book the cats Minz and Maunz cry bitter tears over the disobedience of Paulinchen, who went up in flames, but also in the well created by Lenz-Gerharz. – Lucy Rogowsky – 2015 – Culture Department of the City of Frankfurt
About the artist – City of Frankfurt: Franziska Lenz-Gerharz was born on February 16th. 1922 in Ransbach in the Westerwald. Before Lenz-Gerharz studied sculpture under Carl Trummer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe from 1948 to 1951, she had passed the master’s examination at the engineering school for ceramics in Höhr-Grenzhausen and taught ceramics there after 1944.
In 1952 she went to Paris to study sculpture with Ossip Zadkin at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. 1971-74 she taught sculpture, ceramics and art history at the Ursuline School in Königstein. Sculptures by Franziska Lenz-Gerharz in Frankfurt: the new “Struwwelpeter-Brunnen” in 1985 at the Hauptwache and the “Three Pilgrims” in 1990 in front of the Leonhardskirche in Alte Mainzer Gasse. She passed away on 7th, 2010 in Frankfurt am Main. – City of Frankfurt
