30 years city partnership Frankfurt-Granada

The work of art is a joint work between artist ROBERT BARBERENA DE LA ROCHA from Frankfurt’s partner city in Nicaragua, Granada, and the Frankfurt artist JUSTUS BECKER aka COR. The Nicaraguan artist came to Frankfurt for this work on the initiative of the Frankfurt-Granada City Friendship Association and together with COR they created this mural on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the town twinning on 9th September 2021. The inauguration of this fantastic work of art by mayor Peter Feldmann took place on September 23th in 2021.

The two artists designed the work together. They met virtually in advance. The result: an image that expresses the bond between the two cities as well as their peculiarities. The representations of Goethe, the eagle and the skyline stand for Frankfurt. On the other hand, the magnificent Granada Cathedral, which is one of the most important colonial buildings in Central America and is the landmark of Granada. In addition, reference is made to the indigenous past of Nicaragua, the volcanoes that are still active in part represent Granada.

The fire engine of the Frankfurt fire brigade stands for the cooperation between the fire department and the voluntary fire brigade Granada, which has been supported by the city of Frankfurt for years. The merging of the hands and coats of arms of both cities in the middle shows the bond in a tangible way. After extensive wall repairs and preparations, the area was made available to the artists. They worked several hours each for 5 consecutive days.

ROBERT BARBERENA DE LA ROCHA has many years of international experience in North and Central America. His colorful works of art have been exhibited in galleries in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Mexico, Venezuela, Canada and the USA. His art took him to Germany as early as the 1990s. In Bonn and Jena, among others, those interested in art were able to examine the works. Barberena de la Rocha also works as a photographer.

JUSTUS BECKER aka COR is one of the most famous Frankfurt street artist. He works internationally and has already created beautified walls in over 15 countries. Photo realism with abstract colors is his trademark. His art has already been shown in galleries, but his home remains the streets with extensive graffiti. The man from Frankfurt is involved in social projects and donated part of his proceeds to charity.
