Santa Cruz de La Palma is the capital of the Canary Island of La Palma, has around 16.000 inhabitants and was founded in 1493. Due to its historical importance as a trading and port city, the city developed into an important centre between Europe and America. The historic old town is particularly worth seeing, with its cobblestone streets, Plaza de España, Calle Real and the typical colourful wooden balconies along Avenida Marítima. Other attractions include the El Salvador church, the Santo Domingo church, the Barco de la Virgen with its maritime museum, and the historic Castillo de Santa Catalina fortress.
