Pauline Julien
Pauline Julien (1928-1998) is a singer-songwriter and actress from Quebec. She is an icon of Quebec culture who has played a major social role by getting involved in the feminist movement in addition to taking up the cause for Quebec sovereignty. In 1961, she met the poet Gérard Godin who became her life companion. The highly politicized artist couple were arrested and imprisoned along with hundreds of others during the October 1970 crisis because of their political allegiances. Following these events, Gérard Godin went into politics and was elected in 1976 with the Parti Québécois (sovereignist party). He occupied ministerial positions. Pauline Julien, for her part, continued her social and political involvement both in her art and in the public arena. Suffering from degenerative aphasia, cutting her off from the stage and from her art for several years, she ended her life in 1998. – Patrice Loranger
