Rijeka is a Croatian port city with around 108,000 inhabitants on the Kvarner Bay in the northern Adriatic. It is considered the gateway to Croatia’s islands and was the European Capital of Culture in 2020. Worth seeing are the Korzo promenade with its historic buildings from the Habsburg era, the Ivan Zajc National Theater from the 19th century and the Trsat castle complex. Of course, there are also interesting wall paintings, graffiti and large murals in the city. Here is a collection of urban art photographed by ALEXEJ ROTH from Heilbronn.

YUSEI
“Friendship for the Future” or in Japanese “未来への友好” is the name of the mural at Ulica Ivana Grohovca 2b which was created on 7th June 2024 as a symbol of the partnership between the cities of Rijeka and Kawasaki in Japan. The circle in the center of the wall symbolizes the fusion of the two cities as one planet. The two hands extending toward the planet are the hands of a child reaching for the future, modeled after the hands of my 7-year-old son. The exhaust vents at the top are modeled after two “rivers. Rijeka means “river” in Croatian. Kawasaki also incorporates the common “river” motif. The artwork was made on a size of 25 meters x 11,5 meters and is the biggest mural by the Japanese artist so far. – YUSEI
