NEPAL: Kathmandu & Patan – Traditional Tiles, Door Gods & Home Protectors – Culture Art Collection

In Kathmandu and Patan, you often see small stone or terracotta tiles with religious motifs placed near house entrances. These elements are part of traditional Newar architecture and are generally referred to as religious relief panels, protective tiles, or small outdoor household shrines. They are typically made of carved stone, fired clay, or more rarely metal. These tiles are not merely decorative but serve with religious purposes as protective symbols against misfortune. At the same time, they function as miniature shrines where residents offer flowers, rice, or incense. The handmade artworks often depict deities such as Krishna, Shiwa, Ganesha, Hanuman, Saraswati or Buddha, as well as protective symbols, mandalas, and mythical beings. Their placement at the entrance is intentional, because the doorway is seen as a transitional space between the outside world and the private home, which the depicted deities are meant to protect, bless, and keep spiritually pure. Besides the numerous tiles, there are also paste up works, wooden boards or wall paintings around the entrance doors.
