The Boudha neighborhood around the Boudhanath Stupa in northeastern Kathmandu is one of the most important Buddhist centers in Nepal. It is strongly influenced by Tibetan culture, as many Tibetan refugees have settled here since the 1950s. The neighborhood is densely built and relatively small in size, but it serves as a major religious, cultural, and economic hub. Around the stupa, there are numerous monasteries, guesthouses, cafés, and small shops and the daily life is shaped by pilgrims, monks, and tourists who walk around the Boudhanath Stupa, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest stupas in the world. An individual page about the remarkable Stupa will follow, but on this page here we focus on the streetart and graffiti around the district. You can encounter interesting urban artworks of various forms; for instance the SATTYA MEDIA ARTS COLLECTIVE created one of its works here as part of the KOLOR KATHMANDU project.

„Sindhupalchok“ – Kolor Kathmandu (39) – MARINA MENUKA LAMA

The mural for Sindhulpalchowk represents the connection Marina has to this district. Her father comes from this region of Nepal and their dog, Singey, is a Tibetan Mastiff brought from Helambu, in the north of Sindhupalchowk. The Mastiff is a special breed of dog that is admired not just for its beautiful, thick fur but also for its loyal and trusting nature. A dog lover herself, the artist decided to do a fun, representational piece that people of all ages can enjoy. Bouddha, the location of the mural, is also home to a large number of owners of Tibetan Mastiffs.

This artwork is part (39) of the awesome series KOLOR KATHMANDU, which consists of 75 murals made throughout the cities of Kathmandu and Lalitpur representing the 75 districts of the country. The fantastic project initiated by the SATTYA MEDIA ARTS COLLECTIVE took part in 2013 and at this time the country had 75 districts, after 2015 with an updated constitution there are now 77 districts. This wall painting shows the artwork for the district Sindhupalchok.
