Sanepa is a neighborhood in the northwestern part of Lalitpur, located along the Bagmati River at an elevation of approximately 1.310 meters. Historically it was a peripheral area of the ancient city of Patan and developed into an important residential and administrative hub in the 20th century as part of the urbanization process, hosting international organizations such as the Nepali Congress Party. In the streets you can encounter interesting urban artworks of various forms; for instance the SATTYA MEDIA ARTS COLLECTIVE created one of its works here as part of the KOLOR KATHMANDU project, and the neighborhood was also home to the former ART LAB collective, which has created many great works throughout the city. The group no longer exists, but the involved artists have formed new crews such as TAG THEORY, the KOR ARTS COLLECTIVE or DEEP SOCIETY by ROG, who is launching new projects in the former ART LAB premises; it also houses the creative clothing label and café space KASHYAPI. Around that spot you will find several graffiti masterpieces.
„Gulmi“ – Kolor Kathmandu (54) – SOURABH THAKUR
Coffee is one of the features that gives Gulmi its fame. In this mural, wisps of steam from the coffee colorfully blend into mountains, creating a unified image of this sometimes-overlooked district. It is believed that the district is a hidden treasure for natural beauty. The mural now rests on a wall that used to be heavily covered by ugly commercial posters. The artist hopes his homage to this beautiful district will stop more posters from vandalizing the wall.
Coffee was first introduced to Nepal through Gulmi in the 1930s, and has become increasingly popular. It is said that Gulmi coffee is especially delicious because of the district’s high altitude and favorable climatic conditions. – Sattya Media Arts Collective
This artwork is part (54) of the awesome series KOLOR KATHMANDU, which consists of 75 murals made throughout the cities of Kathmandu and Lalitpur representing the 75 districts of the country. The fantastic project initiated by the SATTYA MEDIA ARTS COLLECTIVE took part in 2013 and at this time the country had 75 districts, after 2015 with an updated constitution there are now 77 districts. The shown wall painting shows the artwork for the district Gulmi and its connection to coffee.
