NEPAL: Kathmandu - Streetart Thapathali - Graffiti and Urban Art Collection - DAAS, SAADHUX, SATTYA MEDIA ARTS COLLECTIVE, SAUGAT & others

Thapathali is a neighborhood in Kathmandu located along the banks of the Bagmati River, slightly south of the historic city center. It developed as an important administrative and residential area, once associated with the Rana rulers, and today combines government buildings, temples, and everyday urban life. The district is marked by its historical and cultural landmarks, including sites such as the Thapathali Durbar and nearby temples, which reflect Nepal’s architectural heritage and religious traditions. At the same time, Thapathali is a busy transit area, connecting different parts of the city and characterized by traffic, commerce, and mixed-use development. Along the riverbanks and in surrounding streets, contemporary elements such as murals and streetart can also be found, offering a contrast to the historic environment and expressing social themes, local identity, and modern urban culture. Especially the SATTYA MEDIA ARTS COLLECTIVE created one of its works here as part of the KOLOR KATHMANDU project.

DAAS’s style is unmistakable. His fascination with architecture, patterns in nature, fragmented light and sound, and origami fuse into his geometric masterpieces, creating something you can’t ignore. The Red Panda Mural is a demonstration of how visual arts can be used as a means for discussion about social, political, and environmental issues. This artwork is part (48) of the awesome series KOLOR KATHMANDU, which consists of 75 murals made throughout the cities of Kathmandu and Lalitpur representing the 75 districts of the country. The fantastic project initiated by the SATTYA MEDIA ARTS COLLECTIVE took part in 2013 and at this time the country had 75 districts, after 2015 with an updated constitution there are now 77 districts.
