The Tikhedewal neighborhood is located in the southern part of the historic city of Lalitpur and, like many of the city’s districts, is characterized by a dense network of traditional brick houses, narrow alleys, and courtyards—known as “bahals”—which have shaped social and religious life for centuries. Historically, the neighborhood developed during the heyday of the Malla Dynasty between the 12th and 18th centuries, when the city was a major center for arts and crafts, particularly metalwork and woodwork. Even today, small workshops and shrines can be found in Tikhedewal that carry on this tradition, often hidden inconspicuously in the courtyards. The neighborhood is less monumental but offers all the more authentic insights into the everyday life of Newar culture, with its festivals, rituals, and the close connection between living, craftsmanship, and religion. The streets also feature magnificent urban art, including a large mural by the fantastic FEARLESS COLLECTIVE, remnants from the former crew ART LAB or works by artists from the TAG THEORY network, whose graffiti shop is also located in the neighborhood.
