ITALY: Streetart Turin - Borgata Rosa-Sassi - Via Po - "Spazio Portici - Creative Paths" - First Edition 2020

The first project edition in 2020, starting from via Po, thanks to the next contributions of the visual and performing arts, will gradually animate the arcades of via Nizza, via Sacchi to extend to all 12 km of arcades in the city of Turin. In this first open air exhibition 36 artists showed their great creations.

The artists who have been the first to see their works displayed in this new open-air gallery are: 108, Abel, Andrea Casciu, Aris, Bans, Br1, Camilla Falsini, Corn79, CT, Diego Federico, Droufla, Encs, Fabio Petani, Geometric Bang, Giorgio Bartocci, Howlers, Kiki Skipi, Livio Ninni, Luca Font, Mach505, Mauro149, Moneyless, Mr Fijodor, Nice and the fox, Ninja1, Rems182, Sea Creative, Shekoo, Supe, Truly design Crew, Vesod, Viola Gesmundo, Wasp, Wat, Wens, Wubik.

From the urban artists onwards the arches will not remain empty. The works will become itinerant and in their place other creative paths will be presented: Artists from the Albertina Academy, designers and graphic designers as the protagonists of Graphic Days or Design Weeks. Check out as well the photos from the second edition in 2021 at Via Nizza. Till April 4th there is an open call for the 2022 edition.

“Spazio Portici – Creative Paths” is a project of the City of Turin, Creative Turin and the Contrada Torino Onlus Foundation. The goal is to open spaces for artistic expression under the arcades of the city, focusing attention on the enhancement of creativity with a particular focus on youth. Along the 12 kilometers of arcades will develop over time installations, exhibitions, temporary exhibitions, artistic happenings in order to create a traveling visual path that will help give new life to the arches and to value creativity.

“Spazio Portici – Creative Paths” is not only a new dimension of artistic expression but also a projection of the future of art, integrated with urban spaces in a non conventional. The open-air gallery was strongly desired by the Department of Rights, Youth and Creativity of the City of Turin. The images of the artworks from the first edition were take by photographer Gianluca Platania and Federico Bernini from the Visual Crew.

108

Guido Bisagni, aka 108, was born in 1978 in Alessandria, where he lives and works. Active on the national graffiti writing scene since the early nineties, he is among the most illustrious names in the movement. He began his career carrying out interventions in abandoned and dilapidated industrial spaces, then bringing the traditional art of graffiti to a pure abstraction to experience the symbolic meaning of form as an ancestral symbol. Without borders or details, the artist’s interventions look like large mysterious black holes.

Abel paints portals to other worlds, altars to remind us to become aware, talismans for dark times. After 12 years of art direction and advertising he leaves his job to devote himself to a research that finds its heart in graphics, visual synthesis, the evolution of symbolism and occultism, moved since childhood by the idea that mankind is was sick.

ANDREA CASCIU

Born in 1983, Andrea Casciu graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Sassari, where he deepened his artistic research towards painting, sculpture and engraving. Mutability and transformations are the basis of his investigation, Casciu creates associations of images and fantastic worlds that interact with the icon of his face. In his work there is a stubborn self-analysis that daily pushes him to a continuous study of himself and everything that surrounds him. Lives and works in Bologna.

ARIS

Aris was born in 1978 in Viareggio, where he lives and works. He began his activity as a writer at a young age, painting first on trains and then on wall supports. Very personal style exercises, born from the transformation of letters, lead him to develop sinuous moving graphics close to the abstraction of form, passing from the use of spray cans to acrylics and inks. He has exhibited in numerous galleries and participated in major European events dedicated to street art.

BANS

Edo Bansone was born in Turin on 23 October 1985. In 2003 he approached the world of writing starting to frequent the scene and forming the first crews, then becoming part of a real family the Bocca crew, of which he still does part, starting to shoot national and international events. In 2010 he embarks on another side of art, illustration, transforming it into work. From that moment he began his apprenticeship as a tattoo artist, which led him to open the Bansone Tattoo Studio in 2016.

BR1’s work is full of social content and intends to solicit reflections on the contradictions that contrast the cultural model of the West and the tradition of the peoples bordering the Mediterranean; a contrast that sees the sea itself as a watershed between peoples, as well as underlining the ephemeral nature of that balance that should bind civilizations united by history and which have survived political and religious contrasts for centuries. Through interventions carried out mainly in the public space, in which it favors an ephemeral and spontaneous approach, BR1 investigates the aspects of integration and lack of integration between peoples, the most significant social and political phenomenon of our times, and focuses attention on both crisis of Eurocentric values than that of Western hegemony.

CAMILLA FALSINI

His work is characterized by clean lines, stylized and minimal shapes and strong colors and ranges from editorial illustration to large wall paintings, from design objects to books. CORN 79

From the beginning his works have been published in all the main street art magazines. He also participates in numerous conferences and exhibitions and creates works of art in many European countries. With various other world-famous artists he created important murals for the redevelopment of urban areas. Promoter of the creation of the ‘Murarte’ project of the city of Turin, Italy, in 2001 he founded “il Cerchio e le Gocce” the first Italian association dedicated to the promotion of urban creativity. In fact, Corn79’s current career is not just about graffiti, but branches out in a heterogeneous and disparate way, free from the continuum: from walls to urban art, to canvas, up to installations. Different materials, media and supports are exchanged to express a research that breaks the boundaries, giving way to an eclectic mix.

From the first experiments, influenced by the more classic styles of graffiti, he progressively passed to a meticulous research capable of capturing and highlighting the changes in the urban landscape. The fascinations received by graffiti are however present in the phases of this process: the subject-object of his analysis, the techniques used and in part the places chosen for his interventions. The interest in lettering has therefore turned into an expedient for the study of form to the point of reaching, today, a broader research relating to space and contemporary dynamics.

DIEGO FEDERICO

Diego Federico was born in Turin on September 3, 1984. As a result of his studies in graphics, his political beliefs, his passion for the history of the twentieth century, he gradually abandoned the forms of classic writing to devote himself exclusively to typography. The use of typography, therefore, in addition to being part of a personal path, represents an attempt to shift the emphasis from authorship, the backbone of graffiti culture, towards a potentially collective approach. Always passionate about art, first as a pastime then as a real focus, he comes into contact with “graffiti” between the late 1990s and early 2000s, finding the magazine AL in his hands; he began his first real experiments on the wall at the age of 16, trying all forms of expression between ups and downs. He graduated in Industrial Design at the Polytechnic of Turin in 2015, in the same year the union between the didactic and professional training and the passion for art led him to clash fully with the world of “glitch”, finding in it the right language with which to be able to express oneself at best.

ENCS

ENCS 18 was born in Turin in 1979. It took its first steps in hip hop culture in 1994, among the 4 disciplines that enclose it. Writing is king. The constancy in practicing this discipline leads him to evolve his style from letters to characters, or puppet in jargon. Over the years he has taken part in graffiti and urban art events in various locations throughout the country and sometimes even foreign events.

Fabio Petani was born in the summer of 1987 in Pinerolo. In the works there is a disordered harmony of lines, shapes and volumes that integrate with each other with soft and harmonious colors mixed with breaking elements. The research analyzes the chemical and molecular aspect of the objects from which a long work of reconstruction of the elements of the periodic table is born; a production that is increasingly rich in details to bring out an organic complexity in continuous evolution.

He was born in Lodi in 1984 and currently lives and works between Florence and Bari. His artistic career begins with the encounter, in 1998, with the world of graffiti, thanks to many important writers who live and frequent the city of Lodi. His work is based on color, the study of abstract shapes and textures, mixed with characters, animals, objects, which define and characterize the artist’s work. HOWLERS

The Howlers Crew was born in 2015 from the meeting of two Biellese artists, Francesca Melina (MELISKA) and Gioele Bertin (MORF). The duo immediately cultivated a passion for masonry by trying to connect territories and people through the artistic medium: they intervene in the urban space with the aim of actively modifying its characteristics. On the one hand, there is the desire to reconnect people and places through the experimentation of paths of participation and social involvement; on the other hand, the goal of transmitting their messages through action in the urban environment is strong. Their eclectic spirit has led them to undertake various kinds of paths ranging from masonry to design and graphics.

With photography and especially with the self-portrait, Kiki begins to discover herself, to investigate herself, and within herself, and understands that there is an immense world in her head and in her imagination. Livio Ninni was born near Turin in 1989. Marco “Macho” Cimberle, born and raised on the outskirts of Turin, is passionate about drawing by copying his grandfather’s watercolor landscapes around northern Italy. The course of study undertaken does not educate him in academic drawing, but the world of graffiti and university studies in Industrial Design keep his creative passion alive. His works represent the symbologies embodied by animals, whose interpretative ambiguity is the main interpretation. Nice & the Fox was born in Rivoli, in 1986. She graduated in Industrial Design at the Polytechnic of Turin and obtained a Master in Communication from the IED (European Institute of Design). MR FIJODOR

MrFijodor tried for years to have a tag like all writers, but in the end he was satisfied with his first name. Child with a strong creative vein, he began by making monsters with LEGO bricks and drawing on the walls of his bedroom. In recent years, his production has been very varied, ranging from installations to thematic murals, but also performances and graffiti, which he has been dealing with since 1994. He creates works whose subjects are usually elementary forms that carry direct and ironically responsible messages; at the base a simple reading key, in order to always be able to dialogue with the user. Very often, his works are marked by a social or ecological criticism, using as a weapon a childishly amazed smile and a spontaneous and direct style, free from complex technical elements.

Born in 1982, Rems182 is a painter, graphic designer and writer. He is co-founder of the Truly Design collective. Fabrizio Sarti, aka Sea Creative, was born in 1977 in Varese. Lives and works in Milan. In the early nineties he began to express his creativity by painting the walls of the city and soon became one of the best known representatives of the movement on the national scene. Over time he replaced the use of sprays with enamels, acrylics and inks, so his style evolved towards a new figurative expression. Sheko, a writer from Turin, born in 99. Art became part of his life 5 years ago, thanks to a lucky meeting with Murarte, immediately becoming passionate about lettering and figurative art. He also follows some courses but his self-taught artistic development is characterized by a great desire to overcome his own limits, practicing in abandoned factories and places. 2018/19 is characterized by works on small and large walls, flanked by other artists. Luca Mustaccioli aka Supe, who grew up on the outskirts of Turin, approached urban art thanks to graffiti. Vesod was born in Turin in 1981 and lives and works in Venaria Reale (TO). His artistic attitude was favored by his father Dovilio Brero, a surrealist painter. Vesod develops an interest in the world of graffiti since the early 1990s. For ten years he has been developing a personal pictorial language in which graffiti plays a central role. Mathematics has an important impact on his works along with Renaissance art and futurism. Vesod harmonizes anatomical proportions and futuristic dynamics. He creates a personal language in which time is considered as a concept, which, closing in solid immaterial forms, crystallizes in a geometric form to revisit the idea of the eternal present.

Viola Gesmundo is an Italian architect and freelance illustrator. Draw on any surface, paper, wood, wall and even leather. Look for the perfect line in a space and follow it. The WASP acronym of “Writing And Sketching Projects”, is a crew born in 2007 and is currently formed by Edoardo Kucich alias Eddyone, and Gabriele Guareschi alias Ride, both with previous experiences in the Italian graffiti writing scene. In 2015 they begin to experiment with techniques and styles different from the typical pairing of puppet and graffiti-writing lettering in search of personal language.

He approaches the world of Graffiti-Writing in 1996 studying lettering, from trown-up to wild-style. In 1998, together with the Monkeys Evolution collective and other writers in the city, he is committed to finding spaces for free expression for Turin. Work that will later lead to the creation of MurArte. Founding member and first president of Monkeys Evolution, he followed the association in all its fundamental steps: from the first Jam organizations, to advertising interventions for well-known companies, to festivals and to the design of urban aesthetic interventions for private and public entities. Since 2014 he has been studying 3d lettering and realism. Sprays and acrylics are his favorite tools for working on the walls.

Born in 1968, he had his first impact with street art in 1988, when, seeing some tired around Turin, he tried to imitate them for a short time. In 95, thanks to DANK, he knows the world of writing by joining his first crew The NSC. Joining the TOTS and subsequently the BOC he thus began to paint on the most disparate urban surfaces. Take part in all the important national and international events such as the Amazing day, the Meeting of stiles, step in the Arena Urban Giant and several others. Since 1999 he has been painting on canvas as a self-taught with various techniques that are still in constant evolution.

OPEN CALL FOR 2022 EDITION

Open Call for the involvement of young Italian urban artists and Piedmont high schools and institutes in the creation of curatorial and creative itineraries under the arcades of Turin through 5 temporary exhibitions The call is part of the “Spazio Portici – Creative Paths” project of the Contrada Torino Onlus Foundation according to a method already tested on two occasions: in via Po in 2020 and in Via Nizza in 2021. There are two sections within the call for the 2022 edition. Professional section: dedicated to professional artists and / or artistic curators. Educational section: dedicated to classes belonging to high schools / institutes of Piedmont. The deadline for the call is 4th April 2022.
