ITALY: Streetart Turin – TOWARD 2030 – What are you doing? – Art, Science, Hope & Innovation for the Future

Turin became a large open-air museum with 18 works of urban art inspired by the United Nations 2030 agenda. This is “Toward 2030, What are you doing?”, The project that combines street art and social commitment and with which the capital Piemontese becomes spokesperson for the Sustainable Development Goals. The great project, which involved important Italian and international street artists, was strongly supported by City of Turin and Lavazza, in collaboration with Asvis (Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development). With Toward 2030, street art and sustainability have found a common language making Turin the first city open air ambassador of the United Nations Global Goals.

The initiative involved 18 international street artists who have created in 2018 and 2019 altogether 18 various places in the city with fantastic murals. 18 urban artworks corresponding to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals plus one by Lavazza (Goal Zero) designed to amplify and disseminate the United Nations 2030 Agenda more effectively. The walls of Turin have thus become metropolitan tattoos, the canvases of an open-air urban gallery which each artist has left his mark by drawing inspiration from a specific one for the realization of his work Goal of the 2030 Agenda. Defense of the environment, fight against poverty and hunger, clean energy, guaranteed education for everyone, health and well-being of each person, responsible consumption: these are some of the goals of the 2030 Agenda inspired the works of the Turin murals. The works have been designed to involve the public and citizens, especially the youngest, by inviting them people to take action. The provocative question of the project is in fact “What are you doing?” is an invitation, expressed in a powerful way through these giant murals, to remember that the task of safeguarding the Planet concerns each of us, no one excluded.

Toward Map made by Luigi Savoia

The beautiful project, which made Turin one of the cities with the most street art works in the world, was then told in the volume “Toward 2030. Urban art for sustainable development”, published by Feltrinelli and illustrated by the shots of Martha Cooper, a famous American photographer and symbolic figure of urban art. Cooper, who has spent several times in Turin in the last two years, offers in this book an inside look at the world of graffiti, documenting the process of making the murals. In the volume, the images are accompanied by interviews with the photographer, to whom the critical texts, the words of the artists and the detailed account of each of the Goals of the project are added. The volume published by Feltrinelli made use of a scientific committee formed by: Enrico Giovannini, spokesperson for Asvis; Francesca Lavazza, Board Member Lavazza Group; Michele Mariani, creative director of Armando Testa and Roberto Mastroianni, philosopher, researcher and art critic. The artists of three Turin collectives have collaborated with them: Il CERCHIO E LE GOCCE, MONKEYS EVOLUTION and TRULY URBAN ARTISTS. The combination of Turin – Art is enriched with a new piece with this extraordinary project and these beautiful works scattered around the city. Do not miss the opportunity to admire them live!  –  Guida Torino
