Pulchowk is a neighborhood in Lalitpur, also known as Patan, in the Kathmandu Valley and a central urbanized area that plays an important role in the city’s modern development. The neighbourhood is known for the major campus of Tribhuvan University, which is considered the country’s leading engineering faculty, also it hosts the Pulchow Campus since the 1970s. But in between there are also tiny neighborhoods with rather unassuming, family-run households. These are small, winding alleys lined with rather modest houses, which the KAALO COLLECTIVE has taken on in its project MⒺTA-मोRPH-OSIS. In the southeastern part of Pulchowk, between the alleys and residential buildings along the hill, several magnificent works of art have been created in collaboration with local artists. Envisioning a community of transnational South Asian counterculture, we want to nurture a space where exchange, growth and meaningful connections are interwoven with public spaces, traditions, and our environment, while building an empowering platform for artists. Through joining resources, energy and intentions in collaborations, we will establish a fierce South Asian creative movement that is based on shared cultures, dedication and passion. With a transnational approach, we will surpass the imaginary boundaries created by historical powers that only serve to divide us.

We are moving towards a future where a community of artists and creatives can work beyond rigid nationalism, authoritarian regimes, and the oppression of our identities and expressions. To establish a brave space for contemporary voices and encourage powerful expressions beyond egos and hierarchy, we represent our very own identities, stories, and experiences and reject the assumption of sole imitation of global, countercultural movements. Description via QR Code: „I am Virgo, a visual artist and storyteller from Kathmandu. Raised in a mixed Rai and Newar household in Kathmandu and Patan, I grew up surrounded by traditional art forms. I create expressive pieces using oil, acrylics, markers, and spray paint on both traditional canvases and unconventional surfaces. I deeply reflect on my cultural heritage, incorporating traditional motifs and spiritual symbolism with a modern funk. Graffiti is exciting.
