Jawalakhel is a lively and diverse neighborhood in Lalitpur, located in the heart of the Kathmandu Valley. Its name roughly means “barley field,” reflecting its agricultural past, although today it is a busy urban area and an important center for daily life, restaurants, bars and trade. One of its main attractions is the Central Zoo, the only zoo in Nepal, which outer walls also show numerous artworks in an urban art gallery. Culturally interesting is the Rato Machhindranath Jatra, one of the most important traditional festivals in the region. During this event, a large decorated chariot is pulled through the streets, accompanied by rituals, music, and crowds of devotees. You can also find a lot of great urban artworks around the neighbourhood. Especially the SATTYA MEDIA ARTS COLLECTIVE created one of its works here as part of the KOLOR KATHMANDU project, also the KAALO collective together with BOX and PAKV did artworks on the French language and culture center ALLIANCE FRANCAISE KATMANDOU or the great local artist SAUGAT created the whole interior and outside walls of the Tag Lounge.

The district of Banke suffers from flooding every year after the construction of the Laxmanpur Dam by India on Nepali soil. This has caused major food shortages and livelihood instability, despite some of Nepal’s most fertile agricultural areas being located here. The ant trapped in dew represents the people of Banke, drowning and dying. The scattered broken lachhis, a traditional hair accessory for Nepali women, reflects a sense of desperation and reminds us of women who are taken from their homes and trafficked to India.

This artwork is part (60) of the awesome series KOLOR KATHMANDU, which consists of 75 murals made throughout the cities of Kathmandu and Lalitpur representing the 75 districts of the country. The fantastic project initiated by the SATTYA MEDIA ARTS COLLECTIVE took part in 2013 and at this time the country had 75 districts, after 2015 with an updated constitution there are now 77 districts.
