Indra Chowk is a neighborhood in the historic core of Kathmandu. As an important junction where several streets converge, it was once part of the ancient trade route between India and Tibet and remains a lively marketplace filled with shops, temples, and street life. The area is shaped by its religious and cultural significance: temples such as the Akash Bhairab shrine, along with annual festivals like Indra Jatra, make it an important setting for urban rituals. At the same time, Indra Chowk is a dense network of narrow lanes where textiles, jewelry, and everyday goods are traded. Just a few minutes’ walk away lies Bir Hospital, the oldest and one of the largest hospitals in the country. On the walls and buildings around the hospital, street art can be found, reflecting social issues, urban identity, and contemporary forms of expression.
