Kundopole is a densely built neighborhood in the northern part of Lalitpur and is considered a local residential and commercial area outside the main tourist hubs. The city also known as Patan is regarded as one of the oldest cities in Nepal, with origins dating back to around the 3rd century BC, and neighborhoods like Kundopole developed within this long historical context. They still reflect the traditional urban structure of “tols,” or close-knit community quarters with distinct social and craft-based identities. In the streets you can encounter interesting urban artworks of various forms; especially the SATTYA MEDIA ARTS COLLECTIVE created two of its works here as part of the KOLOR KATHMANDU project and also several walls were painted by the former ART LAB collective, which meanwhile no longer exists anymore, but the involved artists have formed new crews such as TAG THEORY or the KOR ARTS COLLECTIVE

„Taplejung“ – Kolor Kathmandu (52) – DISHEBH RAJ SHRESTHA

According to myth, shepherds from Taplejung area once suddenly lost a lot of their sheep. In their dreams, the troubled shepherds were visited by the Goddess Pathibhara who promised them the return of their sheep if they offered a few sheep to her. After their offering, they got their sheep back and from that incident onwards, it was believed that the goddess has the power to make one’s dreams come true. – Sattya Media Arts Collective

„The word Kanchanjunga translates to Five Treasures of Snow referring to the five peaks within the range. When I found this out, the word treasure really clicked with me and the image of clean-cut gems came to mind. So, I decided to use geometric and angular shapes in the mural.” – DISHEBH RAJ SHRESTHA

This artwork is part (52) of the awesome series KOLOR KATHMANDU, which consists of 75 murals made throughout the cities of Kathmandu and Lalitpur representing the 75 districts of the country. The fantastic project initiated by the SATTYA MEDIA ARTS COLLECTIVE took part in 2013 and at this time the country had 75 districts, after 2015 with an updated constitution there are now 77 districts. This wall painting shows the artwork for the district Taplejung.

„Doti“ – Kolor Kathmandu (53) – DANAÉ BRISSONNET

The whimsicality of Danaé’s mural of Doti district captures both the known and unknown elements of the district. Layers of symbolism present the conflict between tradition and change, an issue currently affecting much of Nepal. Her detailed mural is packed with stories—from women carrying dokos to other women being bound by chaupadi (practices of isolating women during menstruation); from farmers losing traditional agricultural knowledge to the need for education; from the Karnali river to dependent fishing villages; from walking temples to playful spirits. – Sattya Media Arts Collective
