URUGUAY: Streetart Fray Bentos – Urban Art at the Río Uruguay – School of Deaf

Fray Bentos is the capital of the Río Negro department with approximately 24.000 inhabitants. The city borders the eastern bank of the Río Uruguay and was originally founded in 1853 as „Villa Independencia“. In 1900, it was given its current name, which translates as Brother Bentos; however, it is not known who this person was. From 1861 onwards, large quantities of meat extract were produced in Fray Bentos by the Liebig’s Extract of Meat Company using the process developed by German chemist Justus von Liebig. Since the 1930s, Fray Bentos has lost its importance as a center of the meat industry. However, the resulting industrial landscape has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015. You can find historical art, but also urban art with colorful paintings throughout the streets. Also several facilities are covered with interesting artworks, like the local school for the deaf. Those photos were photographed by world traveller CHRIS AMES, thanks Buddy for the contribution and keep on exploring!
