SOUTH KOREA: Streetart Paju – Graffiti & Urban Art near the Demilitarized Zone

Paju is a city in Gyeonggi Province in northwestern South Korea with around 530.000 inhabitants. The city is especially well known for its location near the border with North Korea. Parts of the city are located close to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), which separates North and South Korea. One of the most important attractions is Imjingak, a memorial and peace park on the Imjin River. It includes monuments related to the Korean War, the Freedom Bridge, and the large Pyeonghwa-Nuri Park. The area commemorates the division of Korea and the families who were separated during the Korean War. Another popular attraction is the Imjingak Peace Gondola, a cable car that crosses the river and reaches the civilian-controlled area near the DMZ. From there, visitors can see parts of the former military area and the surrounding landscape. However, Paju is not only known for its border location. The city has also developed into an important cultural and artistic center. The Heyri Art Village is home to artists, writers, and designers and features galleries, museums, studios, bookstores, cafés, and unusual architecture. Another famous place is Paju Book City, a large center for Korea’s publishing industry with publishing houses, bookstores, and cultural facilities. As well there are interesting works of urban art around the city, here is a photo collection.
